We got da fonk

Our barrel aged chocolate, raspberry sour brown drew gasps of appreciation (or violent wretching) from the crowd at the Beer Advocate "Night of the Funk" beer festival Friday. We were also ashamed we didn't add cherries to it instead of raspberries so we could call it Otter Kriek. To quote a line from one of my favorite movies Spinal Tap, "its a fine line between clever and stupid."

Billy Bragg

Christine and I went to NYC last weekend to see this guy again. We re-established our leftist credentials in one fell swoop. Now we can go back to listening to NPR, driving our volvo, eating French cheese and sipping chardonnay with the rest of the liberal elite Vermonters

Marin County Sweeps the Great American Beer Festival!

Marin Brewing Company wins four golds and Moylan’s brewery & restaurant wins two golds and one silver!

marin county, ca – The sun was shining on a section of Marin County on Saturday, October 13th, as Marin Brewing Company of Larkspur, CA and Moylan’s Brewery and Restaurant of Novato, CA were awarded a record six gold medals and one silver medal at the 26th Great American Beer Festival Competition, the largest national beer competition that recognizes the most outstanding beer produced in the United States today. The top three winners in each of the competition’s 75 different beer style categories were announced at the Great American Beer Festival Awards Ceremony in Denver, Colorado. The winning beers were judged and selected by an international panel of brewing experts from an impressive portfolio of 2,832 entries received from 474 U.S. breweries. More than 1,500 breweries were invited to compete in the prestigious annual event.

Brewmaster Arne Johnson of Marin Brewing Company had a banner year, with four of his ten entries awarded a gold medal in their individual categories. Tiburon Blonde was awarded gold in the Belgian and French-style Ale category, the Triple Dispsea Belgian-Style Ale took top honors in the Belgian Style Abbey Ale category, the Point Reyes Porter took gold in the Robust Porter category and the Star Brew Triple Wheat walked away as the winner in the American-Style Wheat Wine Ale category.

Brewmaster Denise Jones of Moylan’s Brewery and Restaurant also counts this year as a personal best in Denver, with Moylan’s Dragoons Dry Irish Stout taking top honors in the Classic Irish Style Dry Stout category. The Hopsickle Imperial IPA and the Moylander Double IPA took gold and silver respectively in the Imperial or Double India Pale Ale category. This is a monumental triumph for Moylan’s, as 72 beers from all over the country were entered, and the Novato establishment alone was awarded first and second place honors.

Owner Brendan Moylan is elated with the success his brewmasters have achieved. In the 26 year history of the competition, few brewpub proprietors rarely experience the good fortune of taking home six gold medals and one silver. He states, “Our success at GABF this year was phenomenal. Both Brewmasters and their crews worked incredibly hard to bring home those medals. Marin County can rest assured knowing it was well represented at the 2007 competition. Come on in to one or both of the pubs and taste one of seven medal winning ales!”

I'll be here

I'll be representin' Otter Creek/Wolavers at this event. Many of you may already know Todd a Guild Grad from 2005. We have been aging a 50 gallon barrel of Wolavers Brown for 18 months. We added some cocoa powder and some Scottish Wee Heavy to it before deliberately spoiling it with lactobacillus, pediococcus and brettanomyces. Right now it tastes like chocolate nail polish, but when we blend it with fresh brown ale it is sublime
